Gpmc for vista download
Microsoft needs to get their act together. The posts above have been helpful! I too and completely amazed at how unfriendly Windows Vista is for Network Administrators. We have no plans to move to any time soon due to the hardware requirements. What a shame that we have invested so much in hardware and applications and we are forced to comply with new technology standards, yet Microsoft can't even keep current with their own standards. GPMC is yet another thing to add to the list!
Microsoft came through for IT administrators. I tried downloading and installing this RSAT update to my system and it goes through the entire install, however, no MMC snap-ins get created. Could this be because I previously had the Server SP1 adminpak installed?
When I installed this on my box, it didn't work after the install I had to manually register each of the snap-ins dll files. I tried uninstalling the update along with uninstalling the SP1 adminpack and reinstalling the RSAT update with no luck. Do I have to manually go in and unregister the dlls that the adminpack registered? After installation, you need to visit "programs and features" and "turn windows features on and off".
It shows up as a checkbox. Even if you search on microsoft. Why is this not mentioned anywhere else on the web? This is on a freshly built Vista Business machine with sp1 integrated, connected to a R2 sp2 DC. I've spent the best part of day trying to get 22 new admin Vista Business machines to do what I could very easily get XP to do!
We don't have time to be messing around like this.. I don't want to have to roll out SP1 only to find that I can no longer manage the Vista policy from the client as we don't have the luxury of running It's not on to find out that it uninstalls the GPMC to then have to trawl for solutions to get this back in again. Seriously frustrating, and all it does is to continue to damage the perseption of the products, which lately I'm growing tired of defending. Have you tried installing the RSAT package yet?
Furthermore to ease the pain, if you were deploying 22 new machines you could leverage the very nice new image based Vista deployment tools so that it all worked right out of the box on startup. All - Microsoft came through for IT administrators. The linked knowledge base article is for administering a server from Vista. What I want to do is manage Vista from Vista. Apparantly the recommended way to move the app data directory in Vista seems to be through a group policy setting, which I assume means through the GPMC snap-in.
